Kate Torney is the Director of News for the ABC. Before that, Torney was Head of Asia Pacific News. She has worked as a radio and television news and current affairs reporter and producer, a bureau chief, an executive producer and news editor.
Torney was instrumental in establishing Insiders, Offsiders, Inside Business, Newshour (for Australia Network) and ABC News Breakfast. Under Torney’s leadership, ABC News launched News 24, the nation’s first free to air 24-hour television news channel.
Torney has led ABC News through a time of significant change in the global news landscape, introducing major reforms in the way the ABC gathers news and delivers it to audiences across platforms and devices.
